Adventures, in brief

My car has been inexplicable dead since Monday (it sensed the bad weather coming and surrendered preemptively?) Tried to go to work this morning in dad's car, which proceeded to die a tragic death midway there on roads so ice-packed and rutted that no one was going over 20 MPH. Also that's the moment when it started to snow again. (More expected Sunday, and then another "significant storm" Wednesday. I think it may never be warm again. Yes, I still love snow. Pffftt.)

I hitched a ride into town with random stranger (kids, don't try this at home), worked exactly 30 minutes and then decided I was no use to anyone and should get back to the car before it got towed. Hitched another ride with a not-quite stranger. On the way there we saw three cars stuck in the ditch and two others in the process of getting pulled out. Just as I was despairing of ever getting a tow truck out (I called several who laughed at me when I asked how long they thought it would take to get to me) another not-quite stranger pulled up, declared his Land Rover could tow it anywhere ("as long as you keep your head out of your butt when you drive, this thing will never get stuck") and proceeded to do so.

I owe a lot of people cookies when this is all over.

Also I unclogged a toilet all my own today. Clearly I am on my way to being a Real Adult now.

The good news is that this storm has completely cured me of my fear of freezing to death. I've learned to dress for the weather to the extent that I was out shoveling snow in 0-degree weather and got so HOT I had to take off my coat, hat, and gloves!

Can you believe it? I have never gone in the ditch! There was this one time that my car spun out off the road, but only part of my car was in the ditch and with the help of my passenger, we were able to right it back on the road, so I don't think that counts.

Although it's a common occurrence here, I am still terrified of being stuck.. especially now with Grayson. Yesterday, the fourth graders were making a winter survival kit to put in their cars and now I think I should grab their directions and make my own. :S I don't have four-wheel drive, but I at least have snow tires!

Stay safe out there! Also, congratulations on unclogging a toilet. It's not-so-fun to do but a proud accomplishment anyway.

I've only gotten stuck once, during a major ice storm, and that was short-lived ... a couple burly guys came along in short order and pushed me out. I'm a believer in keeping some emergency cold-weather supplies in the car, though, even as infrequently as we find ourselves in this position here. It would just be no fun stuck somewhere in the cold with no blankets or food. =P
